Identify where your evening actually ends
Decide whether you will stay in Deutz, need to reach the main station or want to finish in the old town. This determines whether crossing the Rhine is part of your route or an additional excursion. After a day at the exhibition grounds, changing banks merely to complete a loop is optional.
The right bank offers views towards the cathedral, old town and Hohenzollern Bridge. A viewpoint can be the evening’s destination in its own right. Choose somewhere you can stop comfortably, and check the approach if stairs are unsuitable for you.
Count a bridge as a separate stage
Hohenzollern Bridge can also be crossed on foot. However, allow for more than the visible width of the river: getting onto the bridge and continuing from the far end are part of the journey. Photography stops and people coming the other way can affect your pace.
If travelling with colleagues, agree on a meeting point away from the flow of pedestrians. Someone taking longer over a photograph should not leave the rest of the group waiting in a narrow passage. Keep bags close and remain aware of the shared route.
You do not have to walk both banks
If you are already near the cathedral or old town, you can enjoy the river from that side. Choose between a short riverside stretch and a bridge circuit rather than automatically combining both. Dinner plans or an early departure tomorrow may make the shorter option more sensible.
Check current notices about works or restricted paths before relying on a particular crossing. With luggage, an uncomplicated return that avoids extra stairs or long diversions is especially useful. The best view does not have to come at the end of the longest route.
